That's a good point, wasn't the iPhone originally $600? But perhaps Apple isn't so concerned with cash upfront, and would rather settle for having it subsidized by someone (i.e. Verizon) and get revenue monthly. From what I remember the iPhone was unsubsidized when it first came out because Apple wanted to get the cash up front and quickly, rather than over time.
