What does running a short URL service provide, or why should people use short URLs? The only place where short URLs are acceptable, in my opinion, are in places where character count is limited, such as Twitter and other micro-messaging services, SMS, or some forum postings. As for what running a short URL service provides, it is mostly the value of knowing which URLs are popular (based on traffic stats), and from where this traffic is going. However, this type of information will be available in the future as urlShort grows and progresses, as it should be publicly available for all services.
