Short URLs and the Future of the Web

While Maverick Revolution does develop and maintain the urlShort open-source URL shortener (and also runs our own service using the code.), it is important to take the time to think about the problems with URL shortening, and what we can do in the future to combat these.

urlShort 1.2.0: What's in store

Since I haven't been able to get much work done on urlShort 1.2.0 (as previously scheduled in the urlShort Project roadmap for release last Friday) I ended up having to push it back a month. Summer travel, and other projects (like re-launching mavrev.com yesterday) got in the way.

I will have all work completed and released by the listed date (July 24th, 2009), but I'd like to also give this extended time for development some input from everyone. Currently 1.2.0 is set to include basic modules (like the bookmarklet, Ubiquity command, Firefox extension, and random "real" example), caching of any non-essential data (currently only the counter for shortened URLs and the random example mentioned above), a global Firefox Extension for the project (including options to shorten via any service that tells me they're using urlShort like on the links page), and automatic copy to clipboard.

Advertising on mavrev.com

As you (hopefully) know, Maverick Revolution currently offers two active services; urlShort and imgUp.

But did you know that you can advertise very cheaply on them? For a limited time advertising prices on mavrev.com, urlShort, and imgUp are discounted 50%! So where can you get this amazing deal? On our advertising page of course.

If advertising isn't your thing, perhaps you'd be interested in sponsorsing urlShort instead. For as little as $25 you can sponsor urlShort for 30 days! We currently offer six different sponsorship opportunities ranging from a promotional text bar, to traditional "sponsored by" messages and to full background images! Pass the word along, because the more sponsors and advertisers urlShort has, the better it will get!

Not the advertising or sponsoring type? Maybe you'd rather make a donation. If you do, we'll disable ads for you. :)

And did I mention you can buy advertising on mavrev.com, urlShort, and imgUp at the discounted price for any month for the next year? Talk about a good deal!

Thanks folks!

So, I don't really post here

I've never really been good at maintaining a full blog (kind of like Patrick Norton), but I do Twitter. A lot. So you should probably follow me.

Welcome back!

So after almost two weeks of downtime, Maverick Revolution is back! We haven't kept everything though - It was time to clean up a bit. Any blog posts, news stories, and comments are gone. We will be putting up an archived version of the old site in the future, but they aren't coming back to the new site. Sorry.

But, everything that needed to return has! Plus, we've got a killer new, clean design based on the Austin Zen subtheme. And did I mention we're running on the latest Drupal 6.x now? Yeah!

So what's new? Well, for one thing we're now using Gravatar for images in the comments. All you need to do is use your Gravatar-enabled email address when you post, or register. Speaking of registering, you can now login through four other services: OpenID, Twitter, Google, and Yahoo. Of course, you don't get any big benefits for registering (yet) but it is there... Kind of. The provider we're using for this (RPX) has some occasional issues with establishing connections, so it may or may not work for you but don't give up! You can always register like normal by clicking the "Register" link under our new spiffy logo.

In addition to that, you may notice that at the bottom of any news or blog post that you can find a short URL to share with your friends on Twitter, or anywhere else. This is, of course, powered by urlShort.

Questions? Comments? Compliments? Post in the comments.

Welcome back. :)
